Colombo ILO News: The International Labour Organization’s Office for Sri Lanka and the Maldives together with the Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association, conducted a one day training programme on workplace cooperation for Human Resources Managers and Compliance Managers in the apparel sector on the 6th of August in Colombo.

The programme focussing on International Labour Standards, ILO conventions and Industrial relations issues specific to the apparel sector, also contained an in depth session on communication and conflict resolution.Emphasis was laid on the importance of proactively engaging with worker representative bodies such as trade unions, employee councils and welfare committees.

The programme was conducted by a renowned panel of experts, namely Mr. Gotabaya Dassanayake, retired Senior Employers’ Specialist of the ILO, Mr. VajiraEllepola, Deputy Director General of the EFC, Ms. Priyanthi Fernando, Former Head of the Centre for Poverty Analysis and Ms. Shyama Salgado, National Programme Manager of the ILO Project Promoting Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work,

Speaking at the inauguration of this event,Ms.Indra Tudawe, ILO Senior Programme Officer, stated that “the government has taken many steps together with the Employers Federation of Ceylon and workers representatives to ensure that rights of both employers’ and workers’ are protected. However, there is still work left to be done”. Representing the Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association, Mr. Yohan Lawrence, Country Manager of Quantum Intimates Sri Lanka, emphasised that “workplace cooperation is essential to ensure industrial harmony which is vital for the sustainability of the apparel industry in Sri Lanka”. The programme was attended by over 50 HR managers in the apparel sector.
